Overview

Created for the Adobe x Patagonia Creative Jam, Fairchange is a mobile app that leverages the existing financial habits of consumers to track their fashion spending and incentivize them to shop ethically at companies that support living wages.

Our project placed in the top 10 teams of the Creative Jam and I presented a 2-minute pitch of the Fairchange app prototype in the final round.

Problem

Inspired by Patagonia, our challenge was to design a third-party mobile app that informs a consumer segment about brands that support living wages directly benefitting workers and their families. The solution must create a way to view measurable impact and/or progress.

Process

1. Brainstorming and Ideation

The first step our team took was scoping out the problem, which involved identifying the problem, determining the consumer segment, defining a product, and completing a competitive analysis. Once we set the specifications for our project, we proceeded to create a mood board of what the app would visually look like and began sketching out wireframes.

2. Lo-fi, Mid-fi, Hi-fi

We then proceeded to consolidate our mood board, settling on a distinct theme, colour palette, visual style, and typography. Later, we transferred our initial wireframe sketches to Adobe XD and began working through the lo-fi, mid-fi, and hi-fi stages, prioritizing the key screens. Since it was our first time using Adobe XD, we challenged ourselves to use features such as Auto Animate, Lottie animations, and Repeat Grid.

3. Prototyping Final Sprint

After completing the hi-fi screens, we moved on to the final sprint, where we began prototyping the user flow and interactions for the mobile app.

Solution

The app we designed incentivizes shoppers to track their spending at companies and collect rewards for spending at companies that pay their employees a living wage. These companies are scored based on metrics such as the number of employees, the minimum wage, equal gender pay, and other related factors. In addition, consumers can learn more about different fashion brands by exploring company dashboards.

This app's UX/UI design is a cross between a financial tracker and a rewards app, with simple data visualizations and fun animations. We were careful to ensure that the design did not stray into being a financial app and served our original purpose of incentivizing ethical spending and informing consumers about the living wage initiatives of companies.

Challenges

  • Using Adobe XD for the first time to do mobile app prototyping and visual design.
  • Narrowing the abstract prompt down to an actionable problem and creating a corresponding solution that appropriately addresses the issue for users.

Key Learnings

  • Keep It Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.).
  • Adobe XD actually has some cool features.
  • Need to do more Creative Jams in the future!
